Shower Curtains: Ring Down the Curtain on your Bathrooom Decor

If you’re like most of us, your bathrooms are the smallest rooms in your house, and your shower curtains, if you have them, are the largest decorative features of your bathrooms. There’s no way around it: unless your guests are the sort who slide you shower curtain back to judge the cleanliness of your shower and tub, your fully-extended shower curtain is your bathroom’s focal point.

And if everyone has to look at it, why not spend a little time and effort in getting a shower curtain which is both easy on the eye, and easy to keep clean? Keep in mind that even the most strikingly colored and patterned curtains can have their appearance ruined with mildew.

Because your bathroom is likely to have less-than-generous dimensions, pay attention to the effects that various shower curtain colors and designs will have. If you want to give the bathroom a light, open feeling, stay with white, or pastel curtains, and open designs-for instance, small, widely spaced prints, or stripes. For a more masculine look, a darker curtain will work, but you may have to sacrifice some of that spacious feeling.

And when choosing a shower curtain, consider the shower rod and curtain rings as part of the look you are trying to create. Heavy, ornate rods and rings can spoil a clean, simple look.

Most ready-made shower curtains are of waterproof material-vinyl, flexible PVC, or a combination of polyester and rayon or nylon. But, if you would prefer a fabric shower curtain, either store purchased, or custom-made, you should invest in a vinyl liner to attach to your shower curtain rod before you install the fabric curtain. A liner will save you a lot of time in both mopping up after your shower, and removing your fabric curtain to be thrown in the dryer.

If you have decided on a custom-made shower curtain, your choices of color and pattern will be limited to those of the available selection of waterproof fabric. If you can’t find anything that will work with your décor, you can always go with the fabric of your choice and, once again, find a coordinating vinyl liner to use with it.

The bathroom, with its warm humid air, is, of course, the ideal habitat for mildew and mold. As vigilant as you may be, you may one day discover traces of mold or mildew working their way up your shower curtain. Not nice to look at nor smell, and mold is a definite no-no for anyone suffering with breathing difficulties. So, at the first sign of either, be prepared to attack.

If your shower curtain is washable, turn the washing machine on to its hottest setting, throw in some bleach, and show no mercy. If your curtain won’t survive a trip through the washer, you’ll have to hand-wash it with a bleach solution-a spray bottle would come in handy-and rinse away the solution, mold, and germs, before using the shower again. A spray with salt-water will also help discourage the mold or mildew from reappearing.

An attractive, clean shower curtain can make your reputation as an artist of bathroom décor. So choose and maintain your curtain carefully, and shower your bathroom with glory!
